Why Choose Vitassium

Vitassium® is specifically formulated to provide sodium and potassium for the clinical dietary management for patients with autonomic dysfunction including Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (EDS), Cystic Fibrosis (CF), and Vasovagal Syncope, when increased plasma volume has been shown to be beneficial. Vitassium helps to maintain electrolyte levels, to support healthy blood pressure, and to reduce fatigue and dizziness due to low blood pressure.

Detailed Usage Guide

Vitassium is intended for use under medical supervision. If you are an individual whose physician has recommended additional intake of salt (sodium), Vitassium may be helpful to increase your electrolyte intake in a simple capsule or tablet format. Vitassium also contains potassium in a 5:1 ratio that provides a balanced intake of both major blood electrolytes. Potassium citrate also acts as a buffering agent to minimize pH changes in the blood, and can help soothe the stomach.

It is often recommended to increase both fluid and salt intake in order to increase blood volume, which is typically low in POTS patients. This has been shown to be particularly helpful in patients with blood pooling, hypovolemia, or hypotension1. Except for the hyperadrenergic subtype of POTS, a fluid intake of approximately two liters and an intake of three to five grams of salt is often recommended per day.

Every individual will have a different “ideal” usage and dosage. We strongly encourage you to consult with your physician on what may work best for you.

To assist with making the association between salt intake and Vitassium intake easier, we have prepared the following table:

Note: 1000mg = 1 gram

For example, if your doctor suggests taking 4g (4000mg) salt per day, that would equal 6-7 Vitassium capsules or 24-28 FastChews. To reduce the chance of stomach irritation, we suggest spreading out the dosage in 3-4 smaller doses throughout the day.

If you are using other products containing sodium, be sure to compare sodium values or sodium chloride values against each other, and remember that the two values are not equal.

Vitassium is designated as a medical food, as defined in 21 U.S.C. 360ee (b) (3) as a food which is formulated to be consumed under the supervision of a physician and which is intended for the specific dietary management of a disease or condition for which distinctive nutritional requirements, based on recognized scientific principles, are established by medical evaluation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Vitassium

1. What is Vitassium?
Vitassium is specifically formulated to provide sodium and potassium as part of the dietary management for patients with autonomic dysfunction including Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (EDS), Cystic Fibrosis (CF), and Vasovagal Syncope, when increased plasma volume has been shown to be beneficial. Vitassium helps to maintain electrolyte levels, to support healthy blood pressure, and to reduce fatigue and dizziness due to low blood pressure.

2. Why choose Vitassium?
Vitassium was formulated specifically as a medical food for individuals seeking to increase sodium intake under physician supervision. Many other electrolyte products were designed to support athletic performance, meaning they may contain unnecessary ingredients like sugar and food coloring, or lower amounts of sodium. Vitassium capsules are also more concentrated and easier to digest

3. My doctor told me to take salt tablets. Does that mean just salt?
“Salt” usually refers to Table Salt, which is chemically known as Sodium Chloride. By weight, sodium chloride contains about 40% sodium. Nutrition information on foods is always indicated as the mineral sodium. For example, 1 gram of salt (1000 milligrams) contains 400 mg of sodium. If your physician suggests taking 1g of salt, then you can consume either 1g of table salt, or 400mg of sodium as indicated on food labels. Vitassium capsules contain 250mg of sodium per capsule, or 500mg sodium per 2-capsule serving. This equals 635mg salt per capsule or 1270mg salt per 2 capsule serving. Vitassium FastChews contain 125 mg of sodium per 2-tablet serving. Consult our chart below for more information.

4. Can Vitassium be consumed on an ongoing daily basis?

Yes, given the safety profile of the common and safe ingredients, sodium chloride, sodium citrate and potassium citrate, as part of a normal diet and with regular hydration, you can use Vitassium daily as a medical food. If you have specific concerns, please consult with your physician.

5. Does Vitassium upset the stomach?

Vitassium is designed to be kind to sensitive stomachs, and it has been shown to be easily tolerated by our testers and long history of use. Unlike salt tablets that can cause point-irritation in the stomach, or electrolyte drinks that contain high amounts of sugar, capsules cause less stomach distress. Inpidual results may vary.

6. Why is there potassium in Vitassium?

Potassium is critical in the body for a variety of biochemical processes. One important function of potassium is to regulate the balance of water between plasma (blood) and within the cell. Providing sufficient building blocks for the body to self-regulate can be important. Vitassium contains an appropriate amount of potassium to assist in that regard. In general, excess potassium is excreted in the urine.

7. Do you offer free samples?

We currently do not offer free samples to individual customers. Instead, our Physicians Program may be of interest.

8. Vitassium is expensive. Are there cheaper options?

When you break it down, Vitassium is actually less expensive than most options on the market, when measured by price/100mg of sodium. Additionally, the Vitassium Club offers a 20% discount on all products to anyone who relies on Vitassium as a medical food. Apply to the Vitassium Club today.

9. Is Vitassium for athletes? What is the difference between Vitassium and other SaltStick products?

Vitassium is not designed for athletes, and it does not contain magnesium or calcium. Instead, Vitassium was formulated for individuals who are seeking to increase their intake primarily of sodium, under the guidance of their physician.

10. Does Vitassium contain caffeine?

No. Vitassium products do not contain caffeine.

11. Does Vitassium contain iodine?

13. What does Vitassium have to do with Dysautonomia International?

We established a relationship with Dysautonomia International in 2016 to help support their research efforts towards treatment of autonomic diseases, including POTS, and we remain proud partners today. Dysautonomia International is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that assists with research, patient support and public education of autoimmune diseases.

Vitassium Capsules

1. What are the ingredients in Vitassium capsules?
Vitassium capsules contain sodium chloride, potassium citrate, vegetarian stearic acid and hypromellose (vegetable capsule).

2. Are Vitassium capsules the same size as SaltStick Caps?
No. Vitassium capsules are smaller size “0” that are easier to consume than the larger SaltStick Caps size “00” capsules. Both products should be consumed with water.

3. What type of allergens are present in Vitassium capsules? Is there corn, soy, etc.?
Vitassium capsules are non-GMO, vegan, gluten free, preservative free, allergen free, soy free, and starch free.

4. Why do Vitassium capsules contain vegetarian stearic acid? Is that safe?
Stearic acid is used as a solid lubricant that’s helpful during the encapsulation process. It is on the GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) list in the USA that has been used safely for many years in many products. In fact, chocolate contains a large amount of stearic acid naturally, as do other food products. It is present in a very small quantity in Vitassium. It is specifically sourced from a vegetarian source.

5. Are the vegetable capsules really made from vegetables?
Hypromellose is a solid, non-toxic cellulose material derived from plants (wood/cotton fiber). There is no starch or corn present. Hypromellose is suitable for those following vegan and vegetarian diets.

6. How many Vitassium capsules should I take?
As a medical food, you should follow your physician’s recommendations. In general, take one to two (1-2) capsules with water, three to four (3-4) times a day, for up to ten (10) capsules daily. Do not exceed the recommended dose unless advised by your physician. Consult a physician before using this product, especially if you are a pregnant or nursing mother, a child under 18, or an individual with a known medical condition. Individuals with hypertension, chronic renal insufficiency, diabetes, or those on a low potassium or low-salt diet should not use this product without physician guidance.

7. How should Vitassium capsules be stored?
Store Vitassium capsules in a cool (room temperature or below) and dry environment.

8. Is it standard for “salt tablets” to contain other electrolytes?
“Salt” tablets usually contain only sodium chloride, which is often referred to as table salt. The salt is commonly mined or harvested from salt water, and then purified. Trace quantities of other minerals, such as potassium, manganese, zinc and others can be found in natural sources of salt, but the quantities are so small that in the context of a normal diet, they are not necessarily helpful. Vitassium contains purified sodium chloride (salt) that is 99.9% pure. Vitassium also contains significant amounts of potassium, that helps balance the electrolyte content in the body, between plasma and inside cells. Most salt tablets do not contain potassium.

Vitassium FastChews

1. What are the ingredients in Vitassium FastChews?
Vitassium FastChews contain sodium citrate, potassium citrate, dextrates, dextrose, citric acid, stearic acid, natural flavors, crospovidone, silica, magnesium stearate, Reb A (stevia extract).

2. What type of allergens are present in Vitassium FastChews? Is there corn, soy, etc.?
Vitassium FastChews are non-GMO, vegan, gluten free, allergen free, and soy free.

3. How many Vitassium FastChews should I take?
As a medical food, you should follow your physician’s recommendations. In general, take one to two (1-2) FastChews with water, throughout the day as needed, for up to forty (40) tablets daily.

4. Can FastChews be dissolved in water to create a sports drink?
We don’t recommend it. It’s technically possible, but we designed Vitassium FastChews to be eaten directly, so they aren’t very soluble in water.

5. How should FastChews be stored?
Unopened packets or bottles of FastChews should be stored at room temperature and under dry conditions for the longest shelf life. Opened packets and bottles should be kept sealed and used as soon as practical.

5. Do I need to take FastChews with water?
FastChews can be consumed with or without water, depending on personal preference and circumstances. You will still need some source of hydration over time, but you can drink when you need fluid, and take FastChews when you need electrolytes.

6. Can I suck on FastChews or do I need to chew and swallow?
Yes. You will absorb electrolytes quickly through buccal tissue (inside your mouth, under your tongue) so if you prefer, you can keep FastChews in your mouth until they dissolve fully. We recommend that you wait 5-10 minutes before drinking water to maximize the effectiveness of FastChews.

7. Is there color added?
We do not add color to FastChews.

8. Are FastChews suitable for children?
Yes. FastChews have been formulated to be safe for children when used under parental and under the guidance of a physician. FastChews, when paired with water, provide a convenient and healthy alternative to sports drinks, which often contain high amounts of sugar and artificial coloring. **We recommend consulting with your child’s physician for recommended dosing guidance.

9. My FastChews show some brown spots of discoloration. What’s wrong?
With humidity and in warmer conditions, the ingredients in FastChews (sugars and amino acids) can react via the Maillard reaction to create white and brown spots. This is similar to the reaction that gives browned foods their flavor (e.g. coffee roasting or toasting bread). It’s harmless and while visually unappealing, does not affect the performance or safety of FastChews. We suggest keeping the unused product in cool and dry conditions to avoid discoloration.
