How Pro Triathlete Ben Hoffman Developed His Winning Nutrition Routine

How Pro Triathlete Ben Hoffman Developed His Winning Nutrition Routine

Guest Author: Ben Hoffman, SaltStick-sponsored athlete and 8-time Ironman Winner. The process of dialing in my nutrition for Ironman racing has been a long one, and something that continues to evolve each season as I learn and experiment. Looking back to my earliest days in the sport, I had virtually no idea how to best fuel my efforts, so I constantly tested new ideas in training and racing. I can remember very clearly that during one of my first Ironmans in 2010, I even took a couple of candy bars onboard during the bike leg! It really was a scattershot approach with varied outcomes, the recurring theme being GI distress at some point in the marathon. I knew I needed to optimize my strategy, but I was unsure where to turn, and frankly, I was embarrassed to ask for help. After all, I was a professional, and my pride and ego initially prevented...

It's Hot: Humid vs. Dry Heat

It's Hot: Humid vs. Dry Heat

Exercising in the heat requires extra mental and physical stamina, as well as a different approach to training and nutrition. In general, there are two kinds of heat: dry heat, in which relative humidity levels are at or below 40%, and humid heat, in which relative humidity levels are above 40% and can reach (rarely) 100%. Your body will respond differently to the heat depending on the temperature and the relative humidity, and it is important to account for this when training or racing in the summer.  Dry Heat: Dry heat occurs when there is low humidity, which measures water vapor content in the air. Rainfall contributes to humidity levels, so areas with very little rainfall or a desert climate (like St. George, Utah, which hosts the North American U.S. Pro 70.3 Championships) are prone to dry heat. Often, dry heat does not “feel” as hot as humid heat because...

SaltStick Statement on 2022 Price Changes

SaltStick Statement on 2022 Price Changes

For the first time in nearly 10 years, we are raising our prices. Like so many other companies, inflation has substantially increased our costs to make, distribute and support SaltStick products.  We have done everything we can to keep our costs as low as possible, but we can’t maintain our high standards of service and supply at our current prices. Therefore, effective July 5, 2022, the following changes will go into effect:  SaltStick Caps   The price of 1 bottle of 100 capsules (100 servings) will increase to $23.95.   The price of 1 packet will increase from $1.99/packet ($48.00/24-packet box) to $2.75/packet ($66.00/24-packet box). However, each packet will contain 4 capsules (4 servings), instead of 3 capsules – representing an increase from $0.66/capsule to $0.69/capsule.    SaltStick FastChews  The price of 1 bottle of 60 FastChews (30 servings) will increase to $15.95.   The price of 1 packet of 10 FastChews (5 servings)...
