Do Electrolytes Help Prevent Cramps?

Do Electrolytes Help Prevent Cramps?

If you are an avid consumer of endurance media (like we are!) you have probably noticed the uptick in articles related to the science behind anti-cramping. Recently, many articles, including paid, native advertising placements in Triathlete Magazine and other articles in Outside Magazine, report new research into the link between cramping and neural activity. Arguing there is no association between hydration and cramping, the articles suggest that instead of electrolytes, the true cause of cramps is an interruption of “ion-channel receptors,” which control how electrical signals are transmitted between cells. “Some studies showed that drinking pickle juice or eating mustard helped prevent ,” writes Outside Magazine in a recent September article. “Pickle juice and mustard contain molecules called ion-channel activators, which trigger nerves in the digestive system. These activators are why spicy foods feel hot: they don’t burn you, but they trigger the same nerve response that occurs when you...

Cold Weather Hydration & Electrolyte Replenishment

Cold Weather Hydration & Electrolyte Replenishment

Cold weather brings about the common misconception that rehydration during exercise isn't as important as during hot weather. While it's true that typical sweat losses are reduced in cooler weather, the additional clothing worn during winter sports actually contributes to significant fluid and electrolyte loss via sweat. Cold weather studies at the University of New Hampshire, in fact, confirm an increased risk for dehydration.
“People just don’t feel as thirsty when the weather is cold,” says Robert Kenefick, UNH associate professor of kinesiology. “When they don’t feel thirsty, they don’t drink as much, and this can cause dehydration.” Robert Kenefick’s cold weather study, published in the journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, had participants exercise on treadmills in cold chambers and found the participant’s thirst sensation to be reduced by as much as 40 percent. Kenefick concluded that this result is due to our bodies naturally decreasing outward...
